Guy Robert was tasked with one thing: Make the most luxurious and expensive fragrance possible. He had no price limit to use the most insane oils, absolutes, extracts, etc.
What did he make?
Amouage Cristal (Gold Man and Woman) in 1983, when powerhouse perfumery was trending and the old traditions were dying. Robert was not going to allow this to happen on HIS WATCH. So he re-creates the plot of 1930: it’s a global catastrophe, what should Jean Patou do? Make the most expensive fragrance in the world. They both so HAPPEN to be aldehydic florals based on rose and jasmine (amongst others with Cristal).
Cristal is the furthest you can get from Joy on the aldehydic floral spectrum. The dose of civet in this is absolutely bonkers. The incense is a bright sheer cover atop the more oriental facets whereas the rose/civet pairing dominates the floral/animalic side.
This is the greatest fragrance ever created in my opinion. It is the sum of all of the efforts of great perfumers and was made with the sole intention of art, quality, luxury, and from Cairo to Oman this 1983 leather Amouage trunk of the men’s and women’s has come into my hands.
The smell?
Top (1hr): fruity civet with a scruffy musk tone, a rose coated in frankincense powder. The aldehydes soften the civet and pair well with the frankincense, since a smoky aldehyde would naturally
Heart (8hrs): the dance of florals that are supported by plush and enriching civet, and deer musk. The rose and jasmine blend as one— the jasmine peaks out with an incense flair and then the rose overtakes with a richness and chilliness only comparable to 50-70’s Joy. However, this is no May Rose, this an Iris and Damask Rose accord paired with incense and myrrh. What is more expensive than that? Gold? NOPE! Iris is more. This heart accord is the prostate *rg*sm of perfumery
Base(12hrs): oakmoss creates the stinky mossy yummy thing and myrrh joins a small amber and musk/civet. Iris and incense mist the base
