Centaurus opens with a bright, almost juicy burst of cinnamon, and a squeaky clean tobacco accord. I picture a chain-smoking red fruit, except instead of ashy clouds being exhaled, it's fumes of sweet spice. There's a playful contrast here between freshness and warmth, setting an inviting tone.

As it develops, things settle into a more classical amber structure. Resinous benzoin and vanillic sweetness begin to take over, whilst cinnamon's warmth is replaced with a more cooling cardamom.

All of this rests on a soft woody base, which anchors the fragrance without making it feel heavy. The overall effect is polished and pleasant, though not at all groundbreaking. It's easy to wear, but on my skin at least, suffers from the same lacklustre performance as many of Creed's newer, and more recently reformulated, releases.

    I really enjoyed this at the boutique when I tried it, but nothing about it stood out enough to be worth it. There are just so many other fragrances in the mass appealing tobacco space that I find more interesting, like Manhattan Eau de Parfum, Arabesque, and Boundless. The cinammon note was nice, but I'd rather have it with woods, like in Hinoki & Cedarwood. My favorite tobacco fragrance ever will always be Opus XIV Royal Tobacco!

      Really keen to try Arabesque, it's been on my to-sniff list for a while. How does it come across to you? I tip my cap to Cecile Zarokian for creating Royal Tobacco (she just doesn't miss!), but it's entirely not for me. I didn't mind the syrupy sweetness - I found the tobacco neutralised it well - but liqourice/anise is a note I just cannot get along with, and it came through strongly here.

      I can totally understand that! Arabesque is really nice. It's very much in the Manhattan/Herod direction of the Tobacco Vanille DNA, but with a pretty notable plum note giving it a lot of the sweetness. In the end, I went with Manhattan instead, as I found it to be a little more outright unique, but picked up Vinegia 21 from The Merchant of Venice, which has been fantastic!
