Imagine walking alone through an empty cathedral, light slanting through stained glass windows, where shadow and silence do most of the talking.
As the immense wooden door creaks open, a wave of citrusy resins and ancient incense beckons us. Not smoking, but as if their essence has permeated into the stone walls. There's a medicinal herbaceousness too, sweet, yet unsettling, like an altar wine past its prime.
As we move down the nave, the bright frankincense of the entrance yields to a warmer and more balsamic myrrh, with cedarwood choir stalls and rosewood pews emerging through the haze. When we make it to the apse, a faint touch of vanilla appears, like a quiet mercy in an otherwise austere affair.
This is no gentle Sunday service - it’s a full Latin mass. The incense is thick enough to choke a heretic, the air dense with stone, candle wax, and the whispered weight of ritual. It's a solemn fragrance, and to my nose, the medicinal, root beer facet of myrrh is too prominent for me to wear enjoyably.
