Trudging through snow, lost in the wilderness for hours; you only see conifers and birch aside from occasional animal tracks. Finally, an old structure (Baroque? No… Its architecture isn’t familiar) appears as the sun is setting. A small group of people frantically wave for you to get inside from the door. You stumble in. The warmth of a fire is welcoming and you’re enveloped by incense and burning resins in the old wooden walls. Covering the mantle, the window sills, every shallow, flat surface - where did they pick these soft flowers at this time of year? A circle forms and a chant begins in another language, one you’re not familiar with. The words feel protective (at least, you hope). Shadows move past the windows. Unearthly shrieks fill the growing darkness outside. The chants build in an attempt to drown out the wails from the wilderness. What are these symbols carved into the wood? A voice in your head says, “You made it just in time.”
