Clive ChristianMatsukita4.256 ratingsI smelled a bunch, but apart from the two below, only on cards. They'd been sprayed some time before, though, which in my experience makes for a better understanding of the scent.
I'm always keen to try @jbreezyyny recommendations, so Matsukita went on skin, along with E Cashmere Musk, which smelled lovely on paper.
I was unimpressed by most of them, including Blonde Amber and Town & Country (really didn't like this), but there were a couple of standouts that I'll need to try on skin: X For Men, a gorgeous, masculine woody-cardamom, and 1872 For Women, a fresh, impossible-to-hate blend of fruits, florals and woods.
Matsukita: A brief citrus-spice, a suede-like earthiness, and a heavily steeped smoky tea. Nothing jumps out, though - I suppose you'd call this ‘well-blended’. I notice a dankness that's not sweaty, but has a certain humidity that stays throughout the wear. It finishes as a balsamic, woodsy tea blend with a lingering smokiness. Jasmine brings a much-needed softness that tempers the solemnity. The longer it dries, the more I like it, but it doesn't move me in the way I hoped. 8/10
E Cashmere Musk: A clean, subtly sweet, metallic musk. Cashmeran's difficult to describe until you've smelled it in isolation - mineralic, faintly metallic, like a freshly ironed jumper. It has a clean, modern airiness that doesn’t read like soap or laundry detergent, but brings a crystalline texture to the muskiness. It loses its sparkle and ultimately feels a little bland. A less impressive Nasomatto Silver Musk. 6.5/10
Pikovaya Dama (also on skin): I'd tried this before, but wanted a reminder. This may be the pinnacle of the sheer, white-soap genre of perfumery. Poised, elegant, and timeless. So many notes, but they all come together to create an extremely high-end, luxurious soap. Light florals peek through the aldehydes, along with clean musks and a wisp of sweetness, but overall, little change. I'm unsure whether it suits me, but this is stunning perfumery. 8.75/10
