An afternoon of Amouage exploration

I've tried some of these before, but fancied a reminder. Gold and Sequence were on paper, the rest on skin. Here are my <2000 character thoughts:

*Epic Man – Peppery cardamom, dark woods, a little dirty, a little herby. There's a green brightness that brings a spa-like vibe. It comes together like an old wooden throne that's been brushed clean, but still infused with centuries of smoky incense and dry spices. 7/10

*Journey Man – Fresh spice, bright woods and clean neroli create a smooth, lathery bar of Arabian soap. The tobacco-leather brings a mossy dustiness that I'm not too keen on, but ~6 hours in a pleasant balmy sweetness arrives. 5.5/10

*Epic Woman – Sweet, resinous, rosy and fruity - clearly the work of Cécile. It smells like a deliciously sweet ambered jewel encased in a box of clean incense - very sexy and sophisticated. Too candied for me, but I'd like it on my partner. 7.5/10

*Memoir Woman – A funky kick of castoreum soon gives way to purple grapes and dark berries soaked into leather-clad moss. It smells very witch-in-the-forest: not a friendly witch, but not an evil one either, brewing up a dark, mossy, resinous potion. Mousse Illuminee vibes. 5/10

*Gold Man – An aldehydic explosion of musky, retro soap, with some vintage animalics prowling around the base. The white florals and moss are distinct, but blended immaculately. I'd love a shower gel that smells like this, but it feels too dated for me to wear as perfume. 6.5/10

*Dia Woman – This is lovely. Such a kind, fresh, "I woke up like this" sort of scent: mumsy in the best possible way. In the same vein as Gold Man with its retro aldehydic soapiness, but less grandiose and with a softer, more floral presence. 8/10

*Sequence – Opens with a syrupy raspberry infused with the medicinal kind of saffron that I never get along with. It reminds me of a fruity cough drop. Leather and oud simmer down the sweetness and bring a smoky base, but they don't stop things from smelling artificial. 4.5/10

    I ran out of characters above, but just want to say that it was a super fun day of exploration, but none of the scents really won me over. Epic Woman & Dia Woman were my favourites, but I wouldn't wear them myself, and I can think of many other perfumes falling under similar categories that I'd rather smell on my partner. Epic Man took bronze, but he too falls well short of dethroning Jubilation XXV, Memoir Man and Overture Man from my top three. Would be great to hear your thoughts on these! 😊

      Overture is such a great fragrance. Before I got to try it all I heard was how challenging it was. How animalic then a friend bought it and a got a chance to wear it. Ordered a bottle later that day. I will say though if im looking for an Amouage show stopper, Amouage Overture Woman is the one

      Overture Woman is fantastic! It reminded me of Frederic Malle Promise. Perhaps a touch sweet for me, but well up there with my favourites. Certainly detect the animalics in Overture Man, especially later in the wear - but it's more like dusty (yet sexy!) brushed camel fur than anything dirty.

    My favorite house by a landslide!! Hard to say my favorites, since the list is too long and I can't eliminate anything 😂 One ofnmy most hyped upcoming released is the re-release of Myths Man! The second that the pre-orders go live, I'm burning another hole in my wallet!! 😂 By the way, I don't remember if we've spoken about it, but have you ever tried Fuego Futuro? Many people compare it to Memoir man, but as much as I hate to admit it, I prefer Fuego!

      Have you tried Myths Man before? Such a weird, multi-faceted opening, but I thought it dried down in a rather warm and easy-to-wear place. I added it to my list when I saw you mention it before! Very keen to try it before Memoir Man decants come back in stock. I got a real chocolatelyness from Memoir - not so sweet, but rich cacao working with that dark (yet fresh!) greenery. Does Fuego have that vibe too?

    An Epic Amouage Sniffari! You were fierce and truthful with your ratings.. this is something I’m not good, I always try to find the good in things (and in people). Even when I don’t personally like a scent, I try to imagine it from the perspective of a person that enjoys that profile. It pretty much has to be really pants piss water for me considering a score of below 5/10! lol

      That's very generous of you, Curly, and when it comes to people, I most certainly agree. But when we're sizing up our beloved smelly waters, the cynic in me rises forth! 🫡 "Pants piss water" made me chuckle! I get rather methodical with my ratings - 5 is right on the cusp of like/dislike, 6 is 'eh, nice enough', 7 is 'ooh, this is rather nice', 8 is 'blimy, I really like this', 9 is 'good lord above, this is heavenly', and as for the 10... only my darling Benjoin Bohème has ever received a perfect score. I like working in 0.1s too, but thought to keep it more simple here 😆

      I need to get more methodical. I definitely find it difficult when it’s a five star approach. I wonder should we propose to be able to do half stars in the App (so the scoring is more in keeping with ‘out of ten’?

      That would be fantastic! I also find 5 stars difficult to work with. Perhaps not for gender/value/bottle, but certainly for the performance criteria and overall score!

    Journey and Epic Woman 56 are actually two of my favorites. Your thoughts on Gold Man are spot own. I own it simply because I collect and think you should own the first of the house if possible. Its such a beautiful floral Aldehydic fragrance. Im still looking for a situation to wear it.

      Gold Man is a showstopper for sure - would love that smell around me in the shower or on my linen. Does Epic Woman 56 go in a bit of different direction to regular Epic Woman? Mmm perhaps a little harsh on Journey Man - loved the spiced soapiness but as soon as it hit that dusty moss/leather/tobacco stage it started messing with me. If it started similarly balsamic as it went on me after 5-6 hours I'd like it much more, but that's a little too long to wait.

      Epic Woman 56 is one of the extraits so is definitely deeper with the 56% fragrance oil. I get alot of spice then the rose. I never really pick up on the cummin everyone talks about that that's true of the cummin note in general. My experience with Journey Man doesn't quite match yours for me its a really nice spice and tobacco which doesn't really change all that much. It mellows and gets creamier as it goes on but I never get a soapiness

      56% is just ludicrous... must stay oily on the skin for hours and hours. Mmm I never really got the cumin in Epic Woman either, it opened quite sweet, resinous, ambered and never changed much, just got a bit more incensy. Interesting about your take on Journey Man - perhaps my skin just pushes the neroli. I always find subsequent wears to be way different. I have smelt Journey many years (maybe a decade!) ago, but perhaps if I smelt it again in the near future it would show a different side.
