Let me start by saying I wanted to love this!!!! The name alone promises something mysterious, like a scent that swallows you whole (cue 2001: A Space Odyssey). What I got instead was an announcement from across the room and a refusal to leave the party.
The opening is LOUD. Not bold-loud, but a syrupy blast that lands somewhere between burnt sugar and a licorice whip left melting in a hot car. The tonka bean is working the hardest, creamy and heavy, and when it collides with that anise-heavy licorice note, the effect is less "interstellar emptiness" and more "black jellybean dissolved in vanilla milkshake." It's sweet in a way that feels thick rather than smooth, and it clings to the back of the throat.
And on my skin? Chemistry is a cruel thing. 😕 What might read as gourmand on someone else turns vaguely funky on me. There’s a syrupy, fermented undertone that I can't shake, like the vanilla went off slightly. I kept waiting for the drydown to bring the promised void…like something mineral or cool, but it never arrives. Just more sweetness, louder and stickier, radiating outward.
I can see why some people love this. If your skin plays nicely with licorice and you like your gourmands with a bitter, herbal edge, this might be your signature. On me, it's a cloying, slightly off-key miss.
