A Methodical Balance of Rugged Leather and Smooth Leather Fragrances

Obsessive Leather is a leather/patchouli forward fragrance that I find to be unique and addictive. My favorite thing about this fragrance is that it perfectly balances a rugged, animalistic leather with a smooth suede leather. The rugged leather element reminds me of certain 70s/80s fragrances such as Chaps by Ralph Lauren. Think of it like a freshly tanned saddle. However, there is a smooth suede-like leather in this fragrance that softens it and makes it more pleasant. There is a tart fruitiness, especially near the opening, that feels like raspberry or red berries mixed with softer leather accord.

The leather shows up quickly here, and it stays for the life of the fragrance. I feel as if the perfumer had to encounter some trial and error to perfect the formula and balance the different leather elements. It is safe to say that they have succeeded exceptionally well. This is unlike any other leather fragrance I have smelled over the years.

This fragrance also has a vivid, photorealistic olibanum note that is treated with a pyrogenized process made popular by the legendary perfume and flavor lab, Firmenich. This resinous accord helps soften the leather and enriches the fragrance.

Obsessive Leather uses notes such as Indonesia patchouli, jasmine, guaiac wood, and cistus incanus to add some textures to the leather. There is a hint of sweetness and woodiness in here from the Indonesian patchouli. The guaiac wood adds a nice smokiness. It also has a sort of primal musk lingering in the background that adds some dimension. It is never off-putting or overwhelming.

Regarding performance, this fragrance projects about an arm's length away, and the sillage is moderate. This one won't fill a room, however, to me, that is part of the appeal. This fragrance is better for close, intimate encounters. Longevity is about 6 hours on my skin.

Overall, after giving this fragrance a few wears, I am enthralled with this fragrance. It quickly jumped near the top of my list of favorite leather fragrances. It smells wonderful in the air and I couldn't stop smelling my wrists when I first sprayed it on. I never tried anything from this Italian house before, but I am especially intrigued to explore their catalog.
