Sample Saturdays are my favourite Saturdays!
DiorGris Dior4.3188 ratingsI went on another sniffari this morning, sampling a few more from my list. They were all tested on skin and given the whole day to develop.
Gris Dior: This opens much sweeter than I expected, but not overly so. A rosy hard-boiled candy, streaked with ozonic purples and mossy greens. It smells almost edible, but becomes less so as the patchouli warms up. It's a very gentle patchouli, bringing more of an elegant humidity than anything challenging. It has a timeless, sophisticated, worldly sort of vibe, but is also softly spoken and a little melancholy. It's a beautiful smell, but I do wish it had a bit more oomph. 8.25/10
The Cachemire: A crisp, citrusy floral tea. It opens bright and sparkly, but soon turns musky and hazy. It's clean, approachable, and infinitely easy to wear. The opening feels more feminine, while the drydown becomes more unisex, but it remains delicate throughout. A metallic, smoky, powdery quality separates it from Wulong Cha, but they're similar, and I do prefer the Nishane. 7.25/10
Montabaco Rio: Tart rhubarb, caramelized pineapple, something like a spicy iced tea. It's a bombastic opening, but the mentholated, ozonic, dry tobacco DNA of Montabaco OG quickly asserts itself. He's - or perhaps in Rio's case, she's - dressed in suede and walking upon crisp moss, surrounded by mountain air. The lingering tropical brightness works excellently. It reminds me of my mum's ambient scent when I was young: fruity musks, a comforting cleanliness, and a slight trace of cigarette smoke. 7.75/10
La Ravissante: A sweet, juicy pear, adorned in white florals and drizzled with honey. Not pure pear, but a rounded, creamy fruitiness that makes me imagine a whole bowl of citrus, tropical, and stone fruits. The sweetness intensifies, the white florals turn lush, and it starts feeling a bit sickly. A woody balance is eventually achieved, but on a woman's skin on a cold day, it would be delightful. 7/10
High marks across the board today - a rare treat indeed!
