It wanted me to download some other app that would pull the notes which it had never done to me before. Maybe they’re changing some things?

Huh, yeah I've only ever seen this, with the space to add a link that it pulls the notes from, but you only get 3 of those free per month. Afterwards, you have to enter them manually using the little link at the bottom. If you're only being asked to download that service, I'd submit a bug/ ticket
