Fleeting Bliss from Tireless Effort

It only follows that the most sublime of smells must depart quickly, lest it become cloying or normal. The most intoxicating feelings are brief, and the brevity of Diorissimo is unmatched.

The story goes that Edmond Roudnitska, not known for his fondness for realism, worked tirelessly to create an authentic LOTV (Lily of the valley) soliflore by using his garden. He planted LOTV and used them as a reference guide when making Diorissimo, selecting the proper synthetics and some naturals to help create this legendary fragrance.

To be clear, Diorissimo smells like…LOTV— no “esníf” writeup required.

Not many other fragrances from before Diorissimo’s time come to mind as being “hyperrealistic”, aside from Patou’s “Colony”, which indeed smells of Pineapple fruit. It simply was not fashionable to make these types of fragrances. This is in part due to the French tradition of using the kitchen sink and then building a house around it. That’s what the Guerlain’s did. Guerlain could have made a perfect vanilla with ethyl vanilla, but instead Shalimar was made.

A perfect soliflore is difficult to achieve because we already know the source material. The vast majority of fragrances needn’t smell like anything in our world, and when they do, it is often underwhelming. But to capture a flower as beautiful and seasonal as the LOTV?

Farnesol and Lilial are two groundbreaking synthetics that are, I imagine, mostly responsible for the bones of this fragrance. However, in the 1950’s we just had invented gas chromatography but didn’t have headspace technology yet (capturing the smell around a flower we cannot extract an essence from).

Thus, the chore of creating a soliflore was herculean at best, if not sisyphean. But Roudnitska is not one to shy away from challenges and challenging others to appreciate his efforts in rotting fruit accords, cumin spiced chypres, and the overall refusal to conform.

Diorissimo is legendary not because it’s good, but because it is perfect.
