China White with a Chinese dinner
NasomattoChina White3.991 ratingsI find China White extremely difficult to describe, and if you've read any of my reviews, you'll know I'm not often short for words. It takes me back to the smell of my grandma's bungalow (in the most visceral way), where she lived until I was 9: lilac-tinged florals, powdery cosmetics, and a warm, musky sweetness like that of a kitten’s fur.
There’s a definite vintage flair here - not quite powdery grandma, but something hazy and glamorous, like backstage during Hollywood's Golden Age.
Underpinning everything is a smokiness which my Taiwanese friends associate with the herbal incense used in Daoist temples. To me, though, it just feels like a sultry sensuality woven into the softness. Either way, there are layers to this that just mesmerize me.
If any of you have tried China White, I’d love to hear your interpretation. The fact that Gualtieri keeps the notes undisclosed makes debating the scent even more interesting.
And as for the dinner: pork & prawn dumpling coins! Essentially an unwrapped dumpling which I pan-fried meat side down and then gave the other side a little toasting. Delicious!
