A showdown between my most adored vanillas
Not layered, but a spray of each on each wrist. I love them both, and they’re representative of two very different moods, but when all’s said and done, Ani is the one I’ll always want in my collection.
The fresh, musky greenery of Angélique Noire, when paired with the beautifully natural vanilla that Guerlain does so famously well, is simply sublime. I wouldn’t argue with anyone who prefers it, but the sparkly nature of the musks oozes femininity in a way that I can’t help feeling just isn’t me.
Ani, on the other hand, as much as I’d adore smelling this on a woman, feels totally at home on my skin. It has so much complexity that every wear feels somewhat unique. The viscous citrus, the berried juiciness, the soft florals, the rich benzoin humming a resinous tune around the creamy, ambergris-tinged sandalwood - they all play their part in making Ani’s vanilla feel bottomless.
Angélique speaks in whispers and never overstays her welcome. Ani lets everyone know she’s arrived and doesn’t leave until forcefully removed. The former can be worn with ease, never feeling out of place. The latter requires more deliberate usage, easily overwhelming if not mindful of the setting.
Angélique is effortless; Ani is an occasion.
