As I talked about in an earlier post, I was just gifted Oboro, the Byredo Japan exclusive by a coworker I hired in Japan.
I can’t begin to tell you how special of a gesture this was, but as members of the fragrance community, no one will appreciate it more than you all.
I’ve been obsessively smelling this thing all damn day and this fragrance stands out as something so far beyond anything in my current collection. I’m gonna say something as my first take that is going to sound weird but it’s genuinely how this fragrance first presents itself to my nose.
It smells salty. Almost like pickles or fermented vegetables.
But I need you to know that it’s NOT in a bad or off putting way. I get mineral/earthiness and air. I get some sort of foliage or leaf. I do not get peony or amber as the notes indicate. Nothing about this is sweet or spicy. It’s herbal, it’s rainy, dare I say petrichor? If so it will be my first of that latter note.
Would I have ever bought this fragrance if I was on an expedition for Japan exclusives? Probably not, but I am so beyond grateful that I have such a dramatic curveball in my collection. It evokes newness to my brain and that special to me beyond the gesture itself.
Allow me to get a little sentimental. I have spent my career building community all over the world (albeit for video games as that’s my area of expertise), but to be seen in this way, acknowledged so lovingly for how I impacted this person, has been reciprocated tenfold by the mere love language that is this gift.
