A Rose Made Of Stone

I've loved rose fragrances for years, so I came to Rose Roche with high standards. It cleared them.

I love wearing florals precisely because I'm a man. The juxtaposition is the whole appeal — a flower on someone who's obviously not trying to soften himself reads as confidence, not costume. Rose Roche does that better than almost anything I own.

Part of why is that it isn't a literal rose at all. It's built around the desert rose — which isn't a flower but a mineral formation, gypsum crystallizing into rosettes with sand trapped inside out in the desert. So the fragrance follows the rock, not the bloom: no powder, no sweetness, nothing borrowed from someone else's dresser. It opens bright and a little citrusy, then goes dry, cool and faintly stony, like sea air coming off warm rock. The rose is there, but as texture rather than bouquet.

It's become my go-to for warm weather. I get compliments, I feel like myself in it, and even as someone who already owns plenty of roses, this one earned its spot fast. Worth every bit of the splurge.
