Psychédélique is a remarkable scent. Only for the true patchouli aficionados, its opening of damp, dark-green mustiness can be alarming - as it once was for me. But once the vanillic amber begins to rise through the cracks of this dingy, dank basement, bathing the composition in a sweet, resinous glow, it reveals a timeless charm that leaves me head over heels every time I reach for it.
She's fierce, she's formidable, but she possesses a tenderness revealed only to those willing to look past her darker side and see the beauty within.
I have quite the royal court of patchouli: the King and Queen I've mentioned, with the Prince and Princess being Xerjoff Richwood and Chanel Coromandel, and the Duke and Duchess being Jovoy Incident Diplomatique and Guerlain Patchouli Paris.
Long may they reign.
**Edit** – if any of you have taught 6–8 year olds, you'll know how honest they are. Most of the time, there's a split decision about whether my perfume smells nice, but today, we had a clean sweep of positives.
"Teacher, why do you smell like chocolate?"
"Oh really? What else do you smell?"
"I smell vanilla and flowers."
Of course, they have no idea what patchouli is, either in English or Chinese, but even those who arrived late said they smelled chocolate - despite me telling the rest of the class not to share their thoughts before they'd answered (I wouldn't want imitation to influence their actual responses - this is science, after all).
For a fragrance that gets a lot of hate because of its challenging opening, the fact that an entire class of first-graders enjoyed it so much perhaps tells us that certain perfumes deserve a chance beyond that immediate first impression.
