I am not afraid to wear the wackiest, stinkiest, or most obnoxious scent. I do in fact seek out the most potent, intense, dense, complex, heavy, and LOUD fragrances there are. I overspray and I accept myself as an over-sprayer.
When it comes to the OG Angel EDP (2009 batch is as OG as I could get), it’s juice is a revolting green/grey/yellow/black color. It somehow is both brown but not orange so therefore not brown. What? Whatever is in this scent is an OSHA hazard, which delights me. The IFRA can get off our backs right? Anyways…
HOW IT SMELLS:
Top (45min): Blastoff into heaven with some sharp/sparkling aldehydes, a mist of bright synthetic florals (mainly peony and LOTV) as you smell the rocket fuel combusting behind your spaceship. The smog is laden with the smell of “patchocolate”, or patchouli+chocolate, the MAIN and most interesting accord of this fragrance. I do love these top notes though and wish they were more important to the general experience of Angel. It is lovely and delicious while being very dissonant and I think amping up the quality of the top notes would make this even more incredible. I am happy they have the garden series— Angel à la Rose is my personal favorite version of Angel, men’s or women’s, flanker or original.
Heart (2-8hrs):
This is the Angel we know. Honeyed dirt. Fruity patchouli. Spicy dessert. Woody feminine. An ooze of chocolate cake batter that slowly dries back into a powder mix as the patchouli becomes more earthy and smoky, distorting the heart into the base.
Base (36hrs):
Dirt and chocolate dirt cake, aka patchocolate! This patchouli is extremely earthy and dry, lacking a bit in the spicy and resinous qualities of other types. The chocolate is truly groundbreaking, obviously modified by the patchouli, but remains moist into the base without feeling like a heavy amber/vanilla nightmare! If you really focus you could pick out notes, but the base just smells like the patchocolate— the ANGEL ACCORD!!! It is the Guerlinade of the 21st century! Look at what it has inspired: Miss Dior Cherie, Coco Mademoiselle, Flowerbomb, not to mention the dozens of iterations just produced by Mugler (which are almost all good if not great).
The story goes that they accidentally mixed a feminine base with a masculine, liked the result, tinkered much, and made Angel! A fragrance that defies categorization, gender, and purpose. Thierry Mugler, rest in power you absolute legend.
