I officially started a “no-buy” period today.

I made a couple of final big purchases off my wishlist, which will be coming in over the next week or so, and after that I’m done buying full bottles for the foreseeable future with one exception: I have about 6 travel sprays that are almost empty that I will buy full bottles of once they’re gone.

After that, I’m only allowing myself one discovery set/travel spray every 2 weeks (so when I get paid lol) or month and no full bottles until at least after January. After the new year I’ll buy full bottles again but only once I’ve finished one or if I sell one first. (which I don’t see happening because I’m at a point where I genuinely love all my current fragrances)

No reasons other than trying to be more conscious of my spending and getting back into heahltier consumption habits and also having a much more balanced and curated collection. I love having a large collection sometimes but it also stresses me out sometimes lol. I sold half of them over the last few weeks from 200+ down to almost 100.

I also want to get into trying to perfume my own fragrances and be more intentional about what I buy. Finally I really want to pay this house off and move 😭

Posting this to help hold myself accountable lmao.

Also curious if anyone else has done something similar/is planning on it/wants to/etc

I have a pretty small collection which I’m already finding very overwhelming. July was a bit of a spendy month for me, so I have been practicing self control so far in August. Currently, I have my eye on 3 perfumes which I’m deciding on which to gift myself for my birthday next month 😅 After that, if I really have the urge, it’ll have to be smaller bottles. I find that once I’ve experienced a perfume a few times, I’m good on it…time to try something new.

I totally feel that. I love trying new scents but eventually had to realize not every scent I try (or even love) is one that I need to own haha. So no I’ll just focus on grabbing the occasional sample or discovery set. I love smaller bottles. It’s hard to justify the biggest size with a large collection anyway. I buy a lot of 30-50ml bottles for that very reason.

I understand. I’ve been enjoying travel sizes, they’re just the right amount of perfume to enjoy it/ see if I like it 😄

Same here! I have a few that I plan on getting full bottles of soon and those will be my last full bottles for a long while. I’ll still allow myself the occasional travel spray though 😅

I haven't bought myself anything since October 31 last year. I wanted to start really learning the fragrances I already have instead of buying 5 smelling them then putting them on a shelf maybe not picking them up again for months. I will be purchasing bottles in the next month or so but not yet sure which ones. Ive had decants of quite a few and will eventually get most. Just not sure which ones I will start with. It also helped that when I stopped purchasing i also stopped watching fragrance influencers. Now im able to systematically test and decide with i want to purchase

I’m not a big fan of a lot of fragrance influencers either. Half the videos I watch leave me thinking “I’m just getting sold to” lol. Outside of the couple of bottles I’ll buy once the travel sprays are gone, I don’t plan on buying anything for myself either. I may get the occasional sample or discovery kit but the constant full bottle buying will stop. It’s much nicer having a curated collection of favorites you love and know inside and out. I plan on doing the same. Spending way more time with my favorites than I do now.

I’m on an indefinite no-buy for full bottles but I do occasionally slip up 🙈 Generally though I have more fun trying as many samples as possible. I don’t usually find myself wearing any given fragrance often enough to justify more than a travel size. And even then, I’m trying to learn to appreciate and finish the samples I already have before buying too many more! I made it a goal for myself to write in-depth reviews on Parfumo (and eventually here too), which forces me to spend more time with my samples before moving on

I’ve been planning on doing the same! Basically finding ways to enjoy this hobby that aren’t purely based around consumerism. In depth reviews, weird layering combos, etc. I’d also like to order a perfuming kit and try to make some of my own soon. Even if they suck 😂 I look forward to reading your reviews! And I’m glad I’m not alone in this haha.

Yes exactly! I have a perfumers apprentice kit that I’ve dabbled in, haven’t made anything particularly good yet but it’s still fun 😅 looking forward to reading your reviews as well!

I think that’s the kit I was looking at! (Based on someone’s recommendation here a few weeks ago). Even if it turns out bad it looks like fun haha. For the reviews I’d like to wear one for a few days in a row and review but wearing the same one for the whole week will be the hardest part. 😅

I officially received the last of my packages today so my no buy has begun 😔

    1. Cale_Dooper@dyjmerr

Yay! We can do it lol. What were your final purchases?

I just received lilyphea and musc outreblanc but remembered I also will be buying Gaiac 10 next month when it’s available 😭

At least you made some good choices for the season finale of your purchasing 😂 how is Lilyphea?

They might be the loosest no-buy rules I've ever seen, but I don't hate it 🤣

Haha my goal is to not buy at all, but I’m allowing myself the occasional opportunity to slip up because I do genuinely love smelling new things. The caveat is that it can only be small purchases like samples. I mostly just want to stop buying full bottles or large decants and travels sprays. I doubt the “buy a new bottle if I sell one first” will work anyway because I love my collection and don’t want to get rid of any 😭

  6. Borr2112@borr2112

I have far more travels and decants than FBs. Bit definitely too many fragrances overall. It is much more manageable space wise with fewer bottles. Overwhelming to choose a scent at times though.

    1. Cale_Dooper@dyjmerr

I tried the samples/travel spray/decant only route and I started collecting too many of those too which made me realize a no-buy is the best option for me right now lol. I have respect for anyone that can make it work though. I’m too indecisive so I needed to cut down badly.
