What do you think of as a comfort fragrance— what qualities does it have?

Vanilla tends to evoke that comfort feeling for me, I find. I’m not sure why.

Maybe not so conventional but I find something comforting about Molinard - Oud Magnetique. There is something “human” about it, like a gorgeous person using good hair products. Also Tolu by Ormonde Jayne. Something about that orange blossom and juniper combined with that warm, ambery tolu balsam. I find a lot of creamy, musky scents to be comforting - Poudreé by Narciso Rodriguez, and Piano Santal by L’Orchestre Parfum. It also has that “human” quality, with a milky, creamy sandalwood. Entirely different reason but Utopia by Tumi - salted tonka and vanilla with some apple and peony in the opening. It reminds me of something I loved in the early 2000s, I get a positive, nostalgic feeling from it.

  Totally agree! I didn’t include these but honorable mention to Love’s Baby Soft and Gap Heaven - that’s how my mom smelled in the 90s!

My comfort fragrances are usually older, nostalgic ones that I have worn over the decades. Fragrances that my older relatives who have passed on also bring me much comfort. Some of my comfort fragrances include Old Spice, Polo, Givenchy Gentleman (1974), and Amouage Gold Man

  Amouage Gold Man is a killer fragrance and alongside Polo. No one I knew wore them but they are comforting. There’s the kind of Animalic from Gold and then the stereotypical dad smell from Polo? My dad used their shaving cream— old spice I think is a generational comfort fragrance :)

Ambers do it for me, too. Shalimar came to mind first for me. It’s like a hug from an old friend and specifically reminds me of an ex’s mother who I absolutely love. She turned me on to Shalimar and it’s been with me ever since. I wore Ambre Sultan the other day and that did it for me too.

  Those two fragrances are the most influential ambers in my life. Ambre Sultan I gifted to my sister and Shalimar my mother. I wear them both but I feel connected with those.

Comfort fragrances for me are ones that remind me of my mother! She never wore perfume, but I love Guerlain Apres l’Ondee because it smells the dusting powder she would use. It was her signature scent. 😌 I also find lipstick notes to be comforting for the same reason. I’d sneak into her vanity and liberally apply whatever felt right that day. FM Lipstick Rose is pristine for me! 🥀

  Oh what a lovely choice! Apres l’Ondee is such a gift in being the most comforting but cool powdery dessert-like delight. I always love finding fragrances that evoke the smell of my family members so I force them as best I can to wear a fragrance so it becomes locked in with them :p

Shalimar Eau de Parfum and L'Air du Temps are scents my mom wore (more recently I got her Jo Malone stuff). Soft from Poesie is a comfort scent to me (i prefer starchy or grains at night as opposed to sweet).

D&G The One is my big comfort scent. No one in my family wore perfume so nothing pulls me back like that. Most of what I wear to bed are fresh clean scents or my absolute favorite Milk Thistle & Lavender makes me feel like a snuggled baby... Also I love your little friends and personally thought the lighting was great for talking about cozy bedtime scents

I think there’s a differentiation of ‘cozy’ and ‘comforting’ for me? Cozy are probably my bedtime scents mainly made of vanillas. The conforting scents are definitely the ones that transport me to good memories; L'Air du Temps (that reminds me of my friends mum, she was an amazing perfume), some of my mum’s past perfumes but not because they remind me of her, more that they transport me to my childhood like LouLou and Poême. Ex'cla-ma'tion, Ananya and White Musk…..

  ..cont… There are some perfumes I like smelling, not that they bring me comfort but that they bring me back to shit times in my life, it’s an odd feeling but it’s like it triggers the emotions trauma and anxiety but makes me so thankful and happy for my life now and the people I have in my life. Perfumes that do this are Classique, Eternity and Organza. Funny that you mention Cool Water .. I associate that with my first kiss and a sexual awakening in the suppressed catholic teen that I was.. it still makes me weak at the knees lol…

  … but my absolute sniffter of comfort is Charlie Red. My first ‘proper perfume’ that was a Christmas gift and it reminds me so much of my daddy. He was amazing and loved Christmas. I still wear this every night on Christmas Eve and it feels like a great big, giant hug from my daddy.

I don't have a comfort fragrance but I DO have a couple fragrances that cause discomfort when I encounter them. One example: Opium. My Wicked Stepmonster bathed in it.

So very well put by @curlyhen as I do categorize them differently as well. My cozy scents are the ones I’d wear to bed (Harvest Mouse, Shalimar L'Essence, Eau des Baux) meanwhile comfort ones for me are scents that have good memories (Tonka Sarrapia Extrait 75 is my number one as I used it for my bday/christmas, or the Iris extrait as my mom and I share it a lot), but also scents that I feel like wearing out and they make me feel like I’m wrapped in something warm? Idk if that makes sense 😭 anyway, something like Shalimar L'Essence would fall in both categories as I wear it out a lot

My comfort frag is currently L'eau de Parfum layered with Iris Trousseau 🧡 if you're familiar with me, you know I LOVE smelling like a proper snack, and this combo is the buttery, sweet, vintage makeup compact-y snack of my dreams!

Xtra comment to say I actually quite enjoy the lighting in this one! I like direct sunlight too, but alternating between sunlight and this is a good move imo🤷🏾‍♀️maybe others disagree lol
