Inspired by @guerlinaughty’s attar post today I think I’m ready to start exploring Middle Eastern fragrances. The thing is…I don’t love oud. Or at least I haven’t in the past. I also tend to love lighter, fresher scents, which is not what I’ve smelled in my (limited) experience with Middle Eastern fragrances. So…where do I start???

Musk Tahara is a very common and popular attar, so clean and fresh. Basically every attar seller will have one and they're all essentially the same, a fresh soapy musk. I always have one on deck. Ibrahim Al Qurashi has a musk oil collection with many fresh options, they're all variations of clean/floral/fruity. Al Qamar, Shams, & Fajr are my favorite. Plus he has various sizes and gift sets; all are pretty affordable and the brand frequently has sales. Check Etsy for some good/affordable attars, there are tons of authentic vendors.

I would start with really basic ouds and see that the western market will say anything has Oud in it. Buy some weird attar from Amazon and check it out. Honestly a better success rate. I have never smelled an authentic freshie from the Middle East, it would only be to appeal to westerns. That’s what my Palestinian bro in law says

I certainly don’t need a freshie, I just need an entry-level deep boi. I like a good jammy rose and I’ve been known to be into a few dark chypres. I just need a high enough quality place to start to see what’s what.

Amouage is my favorite fragrance house by far and most of my other top houses are also in the Middle East. If you want to start delving into the fresher side of stuff from the region, Decision is an amazing choice. If you really want to start delving into ouds and would like some less-challenging choices, I'd look into Favonius. If you want to challenge yourself more while still having something fresh to balance it out, you could consider Opus XV King Blue, but this is not what I would call "entry-level" by any means. You could also consider something that has oud in it, but doesn't focus on the oud like Jubilation XXV Man
