Wearing a scent at bedtime

I’ve seen a lot of folks mention they wear a scent or have a specific fragrance for bedtime. This is not to come off as rude, but I’m curious as to why? Is it a calming element? Is it a romantic gesture to your partner? What are some good options?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. For me, it has nothing to do with pleasing a partner or aiding with sleep quality, I just always like to be surrounded by fragrance. When I'm home, just chilling by myself, it adds an extra sensory dimension to whatever else I'm doing. Like now for example - reading Dostoevsky is great, but reading Dostoevsky whilst surrounded by a dense cloud of sweet roses and warm woods... even better.

That’s a cool perspective in terms of what you’re reading. I’m a voracious reader and never thought of that, but I do love wearing a fragrance when I am chilling at home (especially ones that I feel maybe polarizing or I’m not to familiar with)

I think the more you get into perfume, the more it makes sense to just wear it all the time. Me of a few years ago would never have thought to wear perfume to bed - it was just something to spray before leaving the house (if I even remembered!) and then not to be thought about all day. If you can narrow down what sort of notes/accords you'd like wearing whilst lazing about at home, then that would be a good place to begin your search.

Ya I’ve really started to feel that. The small collection I’ve started tried to hit each type of activity I guess you could say “special occasion, different seasons, etc” and I just love to wear them even when I’m alone just chilling. I just wish it was a less expensive hobby lol soooo many I want to try but a lot of challenges getting ones I’m interested in from a shipping perspective etc

Yes, one reason is the calm from certain fragrances. Gris Charnel, for example. Another reason can be anticipatory! Eros Flame!

      Ahhh love it!

For me is calming. I'm a really anxious person and falling asleep can be difficult at times. Spraying on my fav scents before sleeping calms me down after a long day. Maybe I'm trying to Pavlov myself a little jajaja

Ya I’m an anxious mess at all times generally lol working on it. What have you found works for you at bedtime?

As other comments say, anything you want as long as you like it is absolutely the best! For me sandalwood, vanillas and rose scents are my comfort zone to sleep. Have you tried this with any perfume?

I do really enjoy sandalwood quite a bit and anything that’s reallllly minty or pepperminty (as odd as that may be). Still very new and a lot of scents/notes are completely foreign to me

I work in a scent-free workplace and I have people in my life who are sensitive to smell, so I have to be careful about my scent bubble. Bedtime is often the safest time to wear whatever I want! If I’m feeling extra ✨romantic✨ then yes, I’ll choose something that my partner likes so I get more snuggles (usually a cozy vanilla)

    1. The Judge Holden@thejudgeholden

Awesome. That makes sense. I’ve had difficulty even attempting it because many of the “calming” scents like lavender I really don’t enjoy and a lot of my tiny collection are pretty powerful or very masculine leaning. I’d love to find something that isn’t particularly strong but calming so I’ll have to do some more research

That totally makes sense. I think a lot of traditionally masculine scents would be “too much” for bedtime for me personally. My favourite bedtime scent is Amber which is a super affordable solid perfume, a cozy vanilla. I like that it has intimate projection so I’m not smelling it constantly, just if my wrists are close to my face. Maybe you’d have some luck with a more masculine-leaning solid perfume or perfume oil!

Getting a whiff of my scent bubble when I move in the sheets is satisfying. I also like to test fragrances at bedtime. If you’re looking for fragrant sleep aids, i recommend something lavender or sandalwood heavy. If you want warmth, try vanillas, incense or smoky scents. I’d encourage you to play with what you have in your collection to see what, if anything, works for you

    1. The Judge Holden@thejudgeholden

Thanks for that. I don’t think I have any frags currently that fall into that category but I’m always trying to learn and try new things

All of the above! Firstly, as a calming, comforting scent. Scent association can help relax you and prep you for bedtime. If you wear the same fragrance or similar profiles when you’re getting ready for bed, it signals to your brain that it’s time to switch off, relax and sleep. And the scent bubble as you’re having a read, and then drifting off all helps towards really good sleep hygiene and habits. It also builds a scent connection with your partner, a familiar scent that ‘smells like you’ as it’s time to snuggle into bed. It can both bring comfort and intimacy. That in turn tunes up the emotional trigger you have to these particular scents and soon you have a bottle of calmness in your armoury to reach for. Good options are going to be specific to you and your own life experience, but it’s best to avoid scents that overstimulate you. For me they aren’t a ‘I’m feeling horny’ signal to my partner, I do have certain perfumes I associate with this too lol.

I guess I like to romanticize my alone at home time. My evening routine and being alone in the house is my like sacred time and my bedtime routine is one of my favorite parts of the day. I do cozy, warm, comforting, relaxing scents as it genuinely just relaxes and makes me feel good. But sometimes it is also a nice time to sample

    1. The Judge Holden@thejudgeholden

That’s a good perspective as well. My evening routine is definitely my scared time as well but I’ll generally maybe throw on a scent when reading in my office or listening to music or playing a video game. I’m loving all of the suggestions though. Thanks for sharing

I was just asking something similar yesterday. It seems like most people just like having something nice to smell at night too. I’m toying with the idea of a perfume I only wear at bedtime to help trigger my brain to be like oh it’s time for sleep

Putting on a scent is a bit transitional for me — it marks a threshold into a different part of the day — out the door for work, coming back home to chill, heading out for a romantic evening. Climbing into bed is also a transition to the world of sleep.
