Oud is routinely described as the most expensive raw material in perfumery, and unlike most superlatives in this industry, that one holds up. The reasons are not marketing. They are biological, agricultural and legal, and they stack in a way that makes cheap oud effectively impossible.

Understanding them is genuinely useful, because it tells you what you are paying for when you buy an oud fragrance, and, more importantly, what you are not.

The biology problem

Start with the thing that makes oud unlike every other perfume material.

You can plant a lavender field and harvest lavender. You can plant roses and harvest roses. You cannot plant Aquilaria trees and harvest oud, because a healthy Aquilaria tree contains none.

Agarwood forms only when the tree is infected by certain fungi and responds by producing a dark aromatic resin that saturates the wood. The resin is a defence, not a product. Without the infection, the heartwood is pale, light and close to odourless.

That single fact separates oud from almost everything else in perfumery. Every other natural material is a crop. This one is a pathology, and pathologies are difficult to schedule.

The yield problem

Even in an infected tree, only part of the wood is resinous, and only part of the resinous wood is high grade.

Distilling oud oil requires soaking and processing a large mass of wood chips to obtain a very small quantity of oil. The ratio is severe enough that oud oil is sold and discussed in fractions of a millilitre in a way that would be absurd for any other material.

Grading compounds this. Resin content varies enormously between trees and even between parts of the same tree, and the difference between an ordinary grade and an exceptional one is dramatic both in smell and in price. Buyers in traditional markets pay serious attention to this, in a way that has no real equivalent in Western fragrance retail.

The time problem

Resin formation is slow. A tree needs to grow for years before it is worth inoculating, and then needs further years for meaningful resin to develop.

That means capital tied up for a long time with an uncertain outcome, which is exactly the kind of investment that carries a high price at the end. It also means supply cannot respond to demand. If oud becomes fashionable this year, no amount of money produces more oud this year.

Compare that with a bad harvest of rose or jasmine, where next season fixes the problem. Oud has no next season.

Pressure on wild Aquilaria populations led to international trade controls, and species in the genus are subject to protection that restricts and documents commercial movement of wild material.

The effect is twofold. Wild harvest becomes legally complicated and paperwork-heavy, which adds cost. And the market splits, with legitimate documented material at one price and undocumented material circulating in ways that reputable buyers will not touch.

This is a genuine conservation success in the sense that it moved the industry toward cultivation. It is also, straightforwardly, a cost.

The demand problem

Here is the part that Western fragrance discussion usually misses. The perfume industry is not the main buyer.

Oud has deep cultural importance across the Gulf, South Asia and Southeast Asia, where high-grade chips are burned as incense and oil is worn directly on skin. Buyers in those markets have been paying serious prices for high-grade material for centuries, and they are not competing on the basis of what a Western fragrance house can afford to put in a formula.

So what are you actually paying for?

For most oud fragrances on a Western shelf: composition, brand, packaging and distribution, rather than agarwood.

The overwhelming majority use a synthetic oud accord, built from woody amber materials, smoky and leathery components, saffron and resins. This is worth knowing because it decouples price from content. An expensive niche oud fragrance is not necessarily using more natural material than a mid-priced one. You are paying for the whole product, and the raw material line is only part of it. Two rules follow.

Do not pay a premium for the word oud. Pay for a composition you actually like.

If you want the real material, buy the material. A tiny quantity of genuine oud oil from a seller who states the origin will teach you more than a large bottle of anything else.

Does plantation oud change the picture?

Somewhat, and it is the most important development in the category.

Cultivated Aquilaria plantations with deliberate inoculation now supply a large share of the market. That has real benefits: pressure comes off wild populations, supply becomes more predictable, and the material is legally straightforward.

What it has not done is make oud cheap. The biology, the timescale and the yield are unchanged. Plantation oud is generally considered less complex than the finest wild material, which is unsurprising given that wild resin forms over unpredictable decades, but the gap matters mainly at the top of the market.
