I know all is subjective, but I would like to know how expectations influence you either on liking or not liking a scent. Has it been a deal breaker for you? And with what perfumes you experienced this?

If it's expensive or a really reputable house I try really really really hard to like it. I have held on to bottles I'll never wear for this reason. Not always, though. These have nearly always been blind buys. If I sample it first and dislike it I won't buy it. It's difficult to get samples where I live and I purchase exclusively online unless I happen to luck out at a thrift store or estate sale.

I do that too! If it's super special I try really hard to like it 😭 I'm not a big fan of blid purchases so I haven't experienced too many bad moments with scents I dislike. If you don't like it, what do you do with the bottle?

Right now it just sits on my shelf! I have considered selling online or something but I am pretty unmotivated to deal with that. A couple are in very pretty bottles, at least!

If it is a hyped fragrance, I expect a lot and often end up disappointed. Probably more so than I would have been had I not heard all the hype

Expectations is what gets me to blind buy a fragrance, but I'm always honest with myself. I couldn't wait to get fragrances called Blood Orange and another one called 10/6 (hyped releases from a house that I love) but I wasn't going to kid myself- I didn't like either! 10/6 (that's the frag name) continues to get praise and I'm the only one like 🤢

Wayyy too gourmand for me lol. There's so much vanilla cake per spray- and I was gonna say I'm a guy nearing 40, so I'm not the target audience for it, but A LOT of guys I know love it. But the point is that I don't let expectations dictate how I feel about a fragrance lol. I let my nose decide for me!

One of the reasons I stopped blind buying fragrances was they almost never met my expectations. Something was missing or the scent profile was completely different than what I pictured in my mind. Roja's Aoud was a great example I thought it would be a deep dark oud but its the most photorealistic rose I've every smelled. Just like if you take a fresh cut rose stem and held it up to your nose. Smells great on my girlfriend but not something I would wear.

Yeah, truly an idea we could have on our heads changes completely how we perceive a scent. It could not be bad but as it didn't met the expectations there's something... Off?

I think that is totally correct. If you think it will smell one way and it doesn't no matter how great it smells you are disappointed. Perhaps you learn to love what it is maybe you never do.
