Curious if any women find that their opinions and reactions to certain fragrances change throughout the month. Are there certain notes you love during one part of your cycle and hate during others? Is there a category you’re drawn to mid-cycle or right before your period? Anything you loathe when you’re PMS’ing?

100% ! I keep a log with Google Gemini to track times of cycles / and what smells good when.

LOVE that! Have you noticed any trends? Anything surprise you? I was sniffing some samples tonight, including a few that I had a visceral reaction to a week-ish ago, and tonight they smelled lovely—and I want to know why haha The science and psychology behind smell—how we sense it, interact with it, are impacted/influenced by it, etc—is fascinating to me, and it seems logical that hormones could make a big impact. We crave different foods during different times of the month, so it makes sense that we’d prefer some notes over others at varying points of our cycle, right?

Yes! Its incredible! Looking at hormones .. when estrogen is rising and is at its peak in the follicular -> ovulation phase, our sense of smell becomes high-def because estrogen is an excitatory hormone that sharpens the senses and amplifies the nervous system.

Yessss that’s was my hypothesis! That our scene of smell becomes more acute, more sensitive during the ovulation stage

At the beginning of my cycle, during menstruation and a few days after, I crave scents that are simple and cozy, things that feel like brain static and just hum quietly in the background. I also find that I can’t even discern the facets of complex scents and usually pick up on and amplify traits that are the loudest (for example, aldehydes are very screechy, oud smells like barnyards, gourmands are sickeningly cloying). At around the second week I like all things fresh, bright, mineralic, crisp and green.

I LOVE ALL OF THIS! I am feeling more confident about my recent suspicions—that there’s a shift for me when I’m ovulating. Like you, everything is a f*cking work of art and a masterpiece and I’m googling perfumers’ names bc I’m like—BRILLIANT! I must smell more of their epic works of art! 😆😆😆

My ovulatory phase is when everything starts smelling gooOooOd. I want high impact, creamy florals, rich ambers, sweet gourmands, zingy aldehydes, citrus .. literally all the things! This is the most dangerous time to go perfume shopping lol literally everything smells like a masterpiece. Then in the luteal phase I still crave complexity but more so in smoother compositions. This is when I start to not want those citruses and bright laundry musks/aldehydes. Scents I like the during this time have that smoothness/creaminess and zero rough edges.

At first I thought my nose was broken 😭 cuz some of my fav scents wouldn't impact me some days of the month then I realized it coincided with my whole cycle. Tbh, on the beginning of my cycle I feel defeated jajaja so I need something fresh for a fresh start! On ovulatory face I need cozy scents that make me feel pretty and on my period days I usually lean toward more light scents as I'm not quite sure why but everything smells stronger. Idk if it is something usual or just me but that's what happens to me!

Wild, right? You def aren't the only one! I wanna do some reading about this now—I'm curious about the science behind it. Interesting wanting cozy and pretty scents mid-cycle. I’m not an expert/scientist/doctor, but I wonder if that’s a common feeling, wanting to smell prettier and more feminine during ovulation.
