How would you classify yourself as a fragrance enthusiast?

I feel like there are so many different types of people into perfumery these days.

It's a bit like The Warriors with all the different tribes.

You've got your old heads who have been in the game for decades.

The bandwagon jumpers who will get bored soon & move on to the next trend.

The dupe gang, the F#ckBois Brigade with all the shiny, expensive things to make up for a personality, the indie makeup crew, the genuinely addicted but in denial folk & so many more.

How would you describe yourself?

I've got the collecting 'gene' unfortunately & collect way too much different stuff - sneakers, vinyl, perfume - and have been into collecting since the early 90s.

    At this point I am very curious. I really enjoy researching and guessing what I might like. Leads to blind buying tho, so I need to keep my guard up😆

      Do you sample loads? Or are you pulling the trigger & taking the risk? I still find myself this far into the game with a ton of samples & I guess they've not piqued my interest enough to grab a full bottle

      I would love to sample more, but I am keeping myself from spending money.. last few blind buys were a total hit, but I know next time I should sample 1st. The blind buying really is addictive I must say:D

    Great, and thoughtful, question. There are so many ways to approach the beauty in this realm, including fragrance. With my background in engineering, I have to be careful not to deconstruct things too much to the point of lost enjoyment. “Well, you realize that’s not true musk and it actually XYZ chemical in a covalent bond with ABC.” Ugh. The science is incredible, but the art is transcendent. It’s music to be heard and enjoyed whether or not one plays an instrument.

    So I’ve always enjoyed smelling good but I only had a few perfumes at a time along with some scented lotions. At Christmas I bought myself, my daughters and granddaughters all some perfumes from a VS sale and was just amazed at the range of scents. From there I got a couple on whatnot for cheap and realized I love having the option of smelling different everyday. Now I feel I am curating a fabulous collection of beautiful scents I love. I’m finding my favorite notes and going from there.

    I’d consider myself a “student” and my collection is more of a “scent library” than a strict wardrobe. By that I mean, I try to learn as much as I can about the art of perfumery and perfume creation, view perfumes as such (an art form), and keep most of what I come across as a “reference” material. Eg. I have over 400 samples spanning decades. I’ve been at this for decades too—though not always as a “student”.

      400 samples? Wow. How do you store / categorise that many samples?

      I keep them in art supply drawers by main category: rose, yellow floral, woody, ambers, etc.

    I really enjoy finding as many scents as I can. For years I wore either Polo, ADG or Coolwater so when I bought 6-7 decants back in December of 2024 I was really suprised at how many different scent dna's there are. Also I will say when I find a fragrance I really really enjoy i usually explore the house quite deeply. Currently I'm all about Amouage, Nishane, Widian and Tuaer's

      The change into trying as many as i can? If that's what you're asking it was just the fact that I never realized what all was out there. The decants I bought that first time were Naxos, Side Effect, Ani X, Layton Exclusif and Tony Iommi Deified. They were all great and I have full bottles of each now. But after smelling those I was never going to be able to just were one fragrance again

      That makes sense. It's an interesting switch. I feel like Tauer in general is quite slept on these days. There was a period of time (I think it was pre COVID) when you saw the name pop up all the time, but it feels less so now
