Who are your favorites, and why? Do you like certain perfumers for certain scent profiles, are there perfumers you avoid, are there ones you think never miss?

I love Jérôme Epinette’s nose particularly as it pertains to musk. I don’t love everything he’s done, but he’s done many that are among my favorite scents. I’m actually really bummed that Byredo is expanding to use other perfumers (particularly since it’s Quentin Bisch, whose nose I do NOT jive with). I also am a big fan of Sonia Constant, who I think does florals beautifully. There are others I think are consistently wonderful, but those two are my top. For perfumers I find interesting but hit or miss (for my nose), Christopher Sheldrake and Jean-Claude Ellena are probably my top 2.

I'm a fan of Jordi Fernandez because he has worked with many fragrance categories AND, he does some amazing things with oud. I am also a fan of MFK for obvious reasons (BR 540, Satin Mood, Grand Soir). I can forgive him for Sauvage Eau Forte 😉

I definitely have some favorites, quite a few really that I think do their thing best .. but overall I like experiencing different perfumers

I have some favorites and I'm pretty invested in them, but not exclusively. Julien Rasquinet, Cecile Zarokian, and Quentin Bische are my top 3 (in no particular order)

I’m not very familiar with Zarokian’s work, even though I have a tendency to seek out female perfumers. Maybe she’ll be next! Bisch is not for me—I’m not at all opposed to synthetic woods (which is what I usually see people complaining about), I just don’t think QB & I perceive scents the same way.

She's one of my all-time favorites!! Amouage Outlands, Royal Tobacco, Silver Oud, Epic 56, Material, Oud Ulya, Nishani Ani and Ani X, Valmont Zafferano, Jovoy Remember Me, Labrotorio Olfactivo Nerotic, and Masque Milano Tango Oud are some standouts for me personally!

I understand your feelings about Bisch- I think he's pretty polarizing. I'm not a fan of most of his designer stuff, but his niche stuff is almost always perfect for me. I can't even begin to count the number of times I try something blind at a store, fall in love with it, then look it up and see that it was made by Quentin Bische 😂

Jean-Claude Ellena and Francois Demachy are probably my two favorites. I don't actively seek them out, but Hermès and Dior being heavily represented in my collection is not a coincidence.

Ellena is hit or miss for me—I love the elegant simplicity of his approach (not to say his scents are simple, just that in the manner of all elegant things it feels like it has exactly what is needed with nothing extraneous), and when I love it I LOVE it, but his misses baffle my nose. L’Eau d’Hiver smells like cold water and fresh oyster to me 😭 but I adore Brin de Reglisse and Ambre Narguile.

I don’t know that I have specific favourites, but sometimes a familiar name will make me feel “safer” with a particular fragrance. For example, learning that Lionel Richie’s Hello is a Quentin Bisch made sense as to why I like it.

Thanks to this community, I am just learning who the actual perfumers are for some of my favorites! My impressions are definitely evolving.

I am so into the nerdy side of the hobby. I started keeping a spreadsheet of my samples and bottles, which is when I started noticing that some perfumers had a lot more success with my nose than others :).
