Saw a post where someone said they bought a “niche” perfume at a MoA. Maybe smaller local boutiques but certainly not at the mall of America. Idk, maybe I’m just strict.
How about you guys? What’s your criteria?

A niche house is one that only does fragrances. There are certain varying levels of craftsmanship and artisanal exclusivity in niche houses because they are solely dedicated to their craft. A designer house does more than fragrances. They additionally do clothes, watches, shoes, etc.. Designer houses can also have certain levels of artisanal exclusivity, however, they also tend to appeal to the mainstream to stay in style. There are certainly niche options available at malls and higher end stores such as Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, or Saks Fifth

If they make anything other than perfume it's designer. Although I'd argue that legacy houses like Guerlain are still niche as they were perfume first, have strong brand identity/ artistic vision for the scents, use the same master perfumers, etc. Whereas a brand like Tom Ford was a fashion designer first and he is not a perfumer. Niche typically have some kind of artistic vision for the fragrance/ brand, limited distribution or their own boutiques, some kind of trained perfumer (ie not just mixing mass produced perfume oils). There is some overlap in smaller niche/indie where the owner is also the perfumer and may have some kind of education in business/ perfumery, but may not have the capital for larger distribution or a physical storefront. Then going to the cheaper indie perfume oils that have flooded and market and are generally just bulk generic perfume oils diluted and repackaged.

To me it simply goes against the grain of the dominant culture. If florals are popular niche makes everything but. I’m about to go to bed but that’s the skinny for me

Niche: not part of the designer paradigm. Indie: an independent house run totally from within. They can and do overlap.

I've always been under the impression that the term referred to a fragrance from a house that only creates perfume and nothing else. I can understand why some people might reserve the term for a scent that's a bit "challenging," though.

Niche just means perfume is their main/only activity. The trend to label perfume as niche to mean expensive, hard to get or experimental is just snobbery. Niche can be complex and weird, or it can be mass appealing.

I was WONDERING because everyone irl I know who likes fragrances was telling me niche means very exclusive instead of the more general “works only in their niche (fragrance)”

People have the idea that it is a prestige "not like other girls" thing and a financial boast, yeah. Mildly annoys me, I'm a purist.

I very much see the financial boast angle that’s an extremely good point. I feel so inferior sometimes looking at other people’s collections. I think it’s the framing some people have around it
